Comment on 'Autojump, or a "cd" that remembers.' by Bjoern

Martin, thanks for that comment. Seems I really missed that one !

Interesting enough though this thing has alot of features "-j" for immediate jump makes it behave similarly like the above scripts. The pattern matching is a bit weird though. It seems to index everything then based on that you can either get selections or jump to the most likely.

If I try out this thing it tends to jump to directories where I don't even want to go. Either I am doing something wrong or the weighting of the thing is off. The above implementation is different though.

It follows the AutoJump scheme which means that it learns from the usage of the filesystem not from the filesystem structure. This makes it much more userfriendly in my opinion.

Anyway thanks for your input !

awesome Idea, but for me, this thing sounds quite similar to what 'wcd' is capable of doing, maybe you want to have a look at that one as well and add it to your 'autojump' here?

Hey there,

yeah, this exploit is another one being out in the wild for linux... especially for those people with many users (i. e. Universities) will have a lot of _fun_ with that bug, as an arbitrary student could get root using that thing. There've been some local user privileges out there, but this one seems rather heavy (as for the account of vmsplice *brr*)... can't wait for that thing to be fixed.

Comment on 'The right Jargon' by Martin Hauser

I guess jargon is really a problem in nowadays 'internet' talk to talk and even more in the daily normal talk as people suddenly switch to a different language inside the language, or so at least it seems. I find that quite annoying when done by other professions and I try only to use it myself if i'm sure everyone else present can understand it.

Still I did not know about the UBD and I've only heard tales of the jargon file... gotta have a look at the latter some time soon.

Comment on 'Internet Explorer 8 passes the ACID 2 test' by Martin Hauser

Hmm, okay. I'm quite astonished as well. I had to read it twice to believe it... IE is back on the browser war? well it never really left but it was more like being without any teeth to chew.

Everyone who knows me, also knows my opinion because of the redmond company. But my opinion is not because Microsoft is bad, but because Microsoft did not do their job very well. If they all of a sudden start developing good software, i for my part will be content with people having their software. They won't ever by my choice i think, but... freedom is also about the freedom to make the choice. If someone chooses to use the Redmond Software and it is a good product with reasonable price they choose... go ahead, i won't bash you about that. My personal taste is different, but as said, it's about the choice.

Now for the web-developers side, hell yeah I agree. I think it will save us a lot of headaches not having to deal with IE's br**f*** rendering flaws anymore.

And for those of the OSS community now fearing Firefox and co. will loose a lot of market share, be sure they won't. Standards Compilance has never been really influencing the standard users choice of browser. It merely influenced the choice of WebDevelopers and other geeks... and i doubt they will really feel too much of it. It might keep them on track though, which i consider a good thing. Good competition brings better things. I'm really looking forwards to better and (hint @firefox) faster and less memory chewing browsers.

Comment on 'Case study: American Prisons' by Martin Hauser

Hi Bjoern, interesting article you brought up there.

I do not think, isolation is the way to go. Sure punishment might seem to be needed, but you are generating a huge problem by locking people away. Not only you create a state with a huge nightmare for both officers and prisoners, you also create a place where you break the law to survive... which seems even more wrong to me.

It's a rather heavy subject you have chosen, but probably one of the most difficult things on western society. What do you do with those breaking the laws? Is it really justified to lock them away and treat them like animals 'for their own safety?'... where do their human rights stop (should they even stop ? ) and can't there be a way which takes all wind out of the gang-politics sails?

I don't know the answer to that... but i know that the current conditions are not the answer.

Hey Bjoern, thanks for giving us an insight on what you've learned about the "Black Death". It indeed makes me shiver as well, considering how unarmed we are in this war against the diseases and i think dying from the plague is one of the worst deaths... I also did not realize that the latest plague was in 1997 and therefore am thankful for this piece of information.

Keep up the good articles (even though this one is really a shaker...!). Thanks
